Quick 10!

#1 Tell us a bit about yourself and your business.

Debra Abbott-Walker, but friends call me Deb. I am the Branch Manager & Senior Wealth Advisor for Cetera Investors. I manage the branch office located in Iselin, NJ and live in Fairfield, CT.

#2 What is the most rewarding part of being a part of the financial advising industry?

The most rewarding part of being both a leader of advisors and a financial advisor is helping people grow—professionally and personally. As an advisor, I love guiding clients toward clarity and confidence in their financial lives. As a leader, I’m equally fulfilled by supporting my advisors’ development, removing obstacles, and watching them succeed in serving their own clients with excellence. Seeing both clients and advisors thrive is what inspires me every day.

#3 What is the most challenging part of working in the industry?

One of the most challenging parts is balancing the dual responsibility of serving clients while also supporting and developing a team of advisors. Even though I have a very small book of clients, I am deeply committed to giving them the attention, clarity, and guidance they deserve. As a leader, I want to be equally, if not more, present for my advisors—coaching them, removing roadblocks, and helping them grow.

#4 Knowing what you know now, what career advice would you give your younger self?

A piece of advice I return to often is “Lead with clarity and compassion, and the rest will follow.” In both advising and leadership, I’ve found that when I take a moment to pause, simplify the situation, and approach it with empathy, better decisions—and better outcomes—naturally emerge.

#5 What’s one way a female has positively influenced your professional or personal growth?

One of the most influential women in my career impacted me in an unexpected way—by demonstrating behaviors I knew I did not want to carry forward. Working with her taught me the importance of clear communication, humility, and leading with respect. Seeing the challenges that arose when those qualities were absent pushed me to be intentional about the environment I create for my advisors as well as my clients.

#6 What skill, hobby, or practice brings you joy right now?

Lately, making space for a simple fitness routine a few days a week has brought me a surprising amount of joy. It’s nothing elaborate—just committing to movement, consistency, and showing up for myself helps me clear my mind and boost my energy.

#7 Describe a unique strength or superpower you have that rarely shows up on a résumé.

One of my strengths is my ability to quickly read people—their energy, their communication style, and what they’re really trying to say beneath the surface. I can usually sense when someone needs encouragement, clarity, or simply space to process. It’s a superpower I rely on every day.

#8 What’s a daily or weekly ritual you rely on to feel grounded?

A nightly ritual that keeps me grounded is ending the day with a few minutes of fun, light reading. After a full day of supporting advisors and clients, curling up with a book that has nothing to do with work helps me unwind, reset, and shift my mind into a calmer space.

#9 What are three of your all-time favorite books?

Three of my all-time favorite books are all by Pat Summitt—her strength, discipline, and leadership philosophy have shaped so much of how I show up for others. Check them out: Reach for the Summitt, Raise the Roof, and Sum It Up.

#10 If you could host a themed girls’ night, what would the theme be?

I’d host a “Game On: Women Who Play to Win” sports-themed girls’ night—a fun nod to competition, teamwork, and celebrating our inner athletes.
