Quick 10!

#1 Briefly tell us about your business.
I’m a financial advisor with the Promontory RM Wealth Management Group at Morgan Stanley located in Birmingham, AL. Retirement planning and equity compensation analysis are the cornerstones of our practice.

#2 What is the most rewarding part of being a financial advisor?
I enjoy the generational impacts of the advice we give. It’s extremely rewarding to me to see our guidance manifest not only in the lives of our clients, but the next generation as well.

#3 What is the most challenging part?
This career can be challenging when getting started. The learning curve is steep, and time management is critical to your success. One of my mentors told me being busy and being productive are two different things.

#4 Knowing what you know now, what piece of career advice would you give your younger self?
Social capital is important. Cultivating genuine relationships provides access to valuable insights and different perspectives; ultimately leading to a strong support system.

#5 What is one idea to further move the needle in attracting, retaining and/or advancing more women in financial advising?
Early exposure to this career path is important. I believe financial advisors should participate in college career fairs and speak at local high schools more often. Mentoring young women and highlighting the work we do will help attract more women to this field.

Emotional intelligence — I have an uncanny ability to understand emotions in others that make them feel seen and heard.

#7 What’s one of your non-negotiable self-care practices?
I have a firm boundary on making sure I separate work and home life. I turn off notifications on weekends and take adequate time for myself.

Sonja Lamar is a part of our complex leadership team. Her dedication to my success has been unwavering. She is a beacon for advancing women in the financial advisory space.
