Quick 10!
#1 Tell us a bit about your business. I’m a Managing Director at Tillotson Kenefick Private Wealth Management of Wells Fargo Advisors in Charlotte, NC. We act as a family office for multi-generational HNW families.
#2 What is the most rewarding part of being a financial advisor? We get to help families achieve their goals (not just financial) through good times and times of crisis and are well compensated for our efforts.
#3 What is the most challenging part? Hiring the right team members to share our vision of client service.
#4 Knowing what you know now, what career advice you’d give your younger self? Move quicker. Don’t over analyze or over think decisions. Time moves quickly and there is much to be done.
#5. What is one idea to further move the needle in attracting, retaining and advancing more women in financial advising? It’s not a new idea, but we MUST get in front of more young women and girls to showcase what a fulfilling and lucrative career this is.
#6. What is one of your superpowers that has nothing to do with wealth management? I doubt it’s a superpower, but people tend to trust me quickly, which always surprises me.
#7 What’s one of your non-negotiable self-care practices? I wish I had some of those!
#8 Who is a woman who has had an important impact on your life or career? It’s hard to pick. There have been so many. My mom was a working mom way before it was cool to be one. Few of my friends moms’ worked, but our family frankly needed her income. But she would have worked anyway. She loved her job, took great pride in her work, and was a fabulous role model for my sister and me. My wife of 50 years (only 10 legal) has been my north star, my best friend, and my staunchest supporter. She carried us financially when I refused to give up on this business and never questioned my decision to keep trying till I got a foothold in it. And my business partner of over 25 years, who though much younger than me, has been my coach, teacher, counselor, and biggest fan. She’s the quintessential role model in our business, having built a successful practice, a loving marriage, and raised Ivy-league educated, competitive gymnast twin girls.
#9 What are three of your all-time favorite books? In high school, it was John Knowles’ A Separate Peace. As a young woman, it was Mary McCarthy’s The Group. More recently I read more non-fiction (though I would love to read more fiction as I eye retirement), like Peter Attia’s Outlive. We send a lot of books to clients and that’s a popular one now. Through the years, I have read and re-read all of Price Pritchett’s handbooks. I have a dog-eared copy of You Squared that I pick up and scan at least annually.
#10 If your life were a movie, what would the title be? The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
